Dr Vasant visit - 19.12.12

Today Dr Vasant, a Micro-biologist working at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, came to talk to year 6 about micro-organisms in the medical setting.  We learned about the huge number of 'friendly' micro-organisms that live in our bodies and help to protect us against micro-organisms that can cause illness.

Also we learned about how hospitals help to stop infection spreading.  By using protective, sterile clothing (scrubs) as well as wearing disposable glove and aprons, doctors and nurses help to prevent the spread of illnesses caused by micro-organisms.

Finally we learned how to wash our hands properly.  Mr Ross put some special gel on his hands and put his hands under an ultra violet light which shows the gel.  After washing his hands 'properly' Mr Ross put his hands under the light again, most of the gel had been washed off, but some still remained - more practise needed!

We were very grateful to Dr Vasant for giving up her time to visit our school.

Learning to wash our hands properly.

The ultra violet light showed there was still gel left after washing.  Shows how improtant it is to wash our hands thoroughly.
